Tanzania Fabric, Facts, and Fun Benefit Scholarship Retreat (Feb. 26-28, 2012)

A benefit retreat for the Tanzanian Scholarship Fund for Tella Lutheran on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzanian, East Africa will be held Feb. 26-28 at the Swanson Retreat Center.

Tella Lutheran is the partner parish of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Omaha.

A three-year scholarship is being established at the Machame Hospital School of Nursing for a young Tanzanian woman. Scholarships also will be provided to the Angaza Women’s Training Center, which provides a variety of training programs such as tailoring, fabric dying, catering, health care, agriculture and hotel management.

Retreat participants will be staying at the Swanson Center. The experience will include tasting Tanzanian food, learning to use a kanga (traditional Tanzanian costume), participating in theme luncheons, learning a song in KiSwahili and participating in daily devotions.

There will be a variety of projects from the simple to more difficult: tablerunners, placemats, purses, wall hangings, quilts, gift bags and ornaments. A supply of Tanzanian fabric, kits and other projects will be available. There also will be coordinating fabrics available for purchase.
